"Pico do Castelo" with surrounding area.
The first settlers on the island of Porto Santo were the Portuguese, who came here during the age of discoveries. For centuries the island was isolated from the rest of the world and became the favourite haunt of greedy pirates from Spain, England and Holland. "Pico do Castelo" was built during the 16th century as a small fort, for its location, to defend against invasion even from French and Algerian pirates.
