Municipal Gardens
Also known as Dona Amélia Gardens, and located north of the Avenida Arriaga, the Municipal Gardens cover an area of 8300 m2. The Convent of São Francisco once occupied this site and the Pedra de Armas, part of the convent ruins, stands beside the lawns.
This garden has some beautiful examples of Madeira’s indigenous flora as well as imported species, all marked with name and origin. There is a stream with some birds and fishes. Well situated in the centre of town, this park has a bar and an art exhibition. Since 1992 cultural events have been staged in the auditorium here.
